What does Linux desktop market share mean?
“Market share” sounds like a count of computers sold, but public desktop trackers usually cannot see every installed machine. StatCounter measures page views recorded through its analytics network. Valve asks a sample of Steam users to join an optional hardware and software survey. Other sources may count device shipments, visits to selected websites or telemetry from a particular product.
These sources answer different questions. StatCounter can show the operating systems generating traffic across participating websites. Steam can show the operating systems used by a sample of PC gamers. Neither source tells us the exact number of Linux laptops and desktops in the world.
Linux also creates a classification challenge. Some browsers or devices may not reveal a clear operating system. ChromeOS, Android and Linux-powered appliances are normally placed in separate categories even though they use the Linux kernel. A desktop Linux figure therefore should not be described as the share of every Linux-based device.
How StatCounter measures Linux desktop usage
StatCounter’s desktop operating-system chart estimates share from page views collected across websites using its service. The chart can be changed by region, device type and date range. That flexibility is useful, but it also means two screenshots may show different percentages simply because one uses worldwide data and another uses North America.
The tracker’s own methodology explanation is essential reading. A web-traffic sample can be influenced by the sites included in the network, browser identification, automated traffic filtering and changes in how an operating system is classified.
Three checks before quoting a StatCounter number
- Check the geography. North America, India, Europe and worldwide traffic can have different operating-system mixes.
- Check the device filter. Desktop data should not be confused with combined desktop, mobile and tablet traffic.
- Check adjacent months. A one-month jump is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof of a permanent change.
How Valve’s Steam survey differs
The Steam Hardware and Software Survey is optional and anonymous. It reports the operating system, processor, graphics hardware and other details of participating Steam systems.
In July 2026, Linux represented 4.01% of the sample, up 0.32 percentage points. SteamOS Holo was the largest named Linux entry at 0.89% of all surveyed systems. CachyOS, Arch, Linux Mint and Bazzite were also visible in the Linux breakdown.
This is valuable evidence that Linux gaming has become a meaningful audience. It is not a replacement for a general desktop tracker. Steam users are gamers, the monthly sample can change and participation is voluntary. The correct description is “share of participating Steam systems,” not “share of all computers.”
Why can Linux market share jump suddenly?
A sudden rise can reflect real adoption, but measurement effects can also contribute. A tracker may add or lose high-traffic websites, improve operating-system detection, change bot filtering or reclassify traffic that previously appeared as Unknown. Regional samples are especially capable of moving faster than a worldwide total.
The Unknown category deserves attention. When Unknown falls while Linux rises by a similar amount, some traffic may have been reclassified rather than representing millions of people changing operating systems in a few weeks. That is not proof that the Linux figure is wrong; it is a reason to avoid an absolute headline.
Automated traffic is another complication. Cloudflare publishes internet traffic research and separates categories such as verified bots in parts of its Radar dataset. Its view is based on a different network and method, so it can be used as a counter-check rather than treated as a direct substitute for StatCounter.
LinuxPanda therefore uses words such as “reported,” names the dataset and waits for later months before calling a spike a new normal.
What does the longer Linux trend tell us?
The precise percentage changes by source, but the broader direction is easier to defend: desktop Linux is more visible than it was several years ago. Gaming compatibility has improved through Proton, handheld devices have introduced SteamOS to a mainstream audience and distributions such as Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and gaming-focused systems have reduced setup friction.
Windows remains dominant on general desktop and gaming datasets. Linux growth should therefore be read as expansion from a smaller base, not an immediate replacement of Windows. Crossing a round number such as 4% or 10% is useful for attention, but staying near that level for several reporting periods matters more.
A durable trend would normally show three things: several consecutive months above the previous range, movement in more than one dataset and no matching classification change that explains most of the increase.
What the numbers mean for Linux users
A larger visible audience can influence software priorities. Game publishers have more reason to test Proton and enable compatible anti-cheat support. Hardware vendors have more reason to improve drivers and configuration tools. Application developers can justify Linux packages and quality assurance work to their teams.
Market share does not guarantee compatibility, however. Anyone considering a switch should check the programs, games and accessories they actually use. A person who depends on an unsupported multiplayer game or a Windows-only business application may still need dual boot, a virtual machine or a second device.
For new users, the safest approach is practical:
- Test a beginner-friendly distribution from a live USB or spare drive.
- Check essential games on ProtonDB and confirm anti-cheat support with the publisher.
- Verify graphics, Wi-Fi, printer, audio and specialist peripheral support.
- Keep a current backup before changing partitions or operating systems.
- Choose Linux because it fits your work, privacy or gaming needs—not because of one monthly percentage.

Common questions about Linux market share
Is ChromeOS counted as desktop Linux?
Most public operating-system charts show ChromeOS separately from Linux. ChromeOS uses the Linux kernel, but combining the categories would make comparisons with earlier reports confusing. On this tracker, “Linux” means the Linux category displayed by the named source unless we clearly state otherwise.
Does server market share belong in this comparison?
No. Linux is widely used on servers, cloud infrastructure and supercomputers, but those installations answer a different question. This page tracks desktop and gaming signals. Mixing server deployments into a desktop percentage would make the number impressive but not useful to someone choosing a laptop or gaming operating system.
Which Linux market-share source is the most accurate?
Each source is accurate only within the limits of its collection method. StatCounter is useful for web activity, and Steam is useful for its participating gaming sample. Shipment reports can help with sales trends but may miss self-installed Linux systems. We prefer agreement across several sources over declaring one tracker a perfect census.
How often should the number be updated?
Monthly updates are frequent enough to preserve context without turning normal daily movement into news.
