Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer and Nextcloud 35 are now available, introducing dedicated team workspaces, a redesigned Photos experience, desktop Office applications, expanded automation and major updates to Talk, Assistant, Calendar and productivity tools.
For server administrators, this is a major feature release rather than an emergency security patch. The best approach is to check app compatibility, create a complete backup and test the upgrade before changing a production server. Nextcloud Enterprise builds will follow after additional testing and certification.
- Nextcloud Teams gives each team its own page, storage and connected resources.
- Photos receives a redesigned library, map search and trip grouping.
- Nextcloud Office gains desktop clients alongside browser collaboration.
- Talk adds classified conversations, channels and announcements.
- Administrators should verify application support before upgrading production systems.
What is Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer?
Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer is the product name for the latest generation of Nextcloud’s self-hosted collaboration suite, built on the newly released Nextcloud 35 server. The official announcement was published on 16 September 2026.
The update spans Files, Photos, Talk, Mail, Calendar, Office, Tables, Text, Deck, Notes and Nextcloud Assistant. It is much broader than the maintenance update we covered in Nextcloud 34.0.3.
| Area | Main addition | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Teams | Team-owned workspaces and resources | Projects are not tied to one user |
| Photos | New library, maps and Trip Memories | Easier private photo organization |
| Office | Desktop Office builds and browser improvements | More flexible document work |
| Talk | Classified chats, channels and announcements | Clearer communication controls |
| Assistant | Skills, OCR, streaming and faster tasks | More capable on-premises AI workflows |
How do Nextcloud Teams work?
Previously, teams were largely represented through Contacts. The new Nextcloud Teams application creates a real workspace for each group. A team receives its own page, storage area and links to the files, tasks, knowledge and other resources its members use.
Team ownership is especially useful when employees change roles or leave an organization. Deck boards and Collectives content can belong to the team instead of one account, reducing the risk that a project becomes inaccessible when its original creator disappears.
Administrators can set storage quotas and inspect usage. Nextcloud notes that further administration improvements are expected in a later minor release, so organizations should test their governance workflow before relying on every planned control.
What changed in Nextcloud Photos and Office?
Photos receives a major redesign
The Photos library now uses a more flexible grid with adjustable density and smoother loading. Search has improved, photos can be explored on a map, and Trip Memories can group pictures from the same journey. The release also lists a timeline scrubber, EXIF editing, slideshows, albums and a year-recap experience.
These features are designed to keep a personal photo collection on infrastructure the user or organization controls. They do not automatically make Nextcloud a drop-in replacement for every commercial photo service; available recognition features and performance still depend on the server, installed apps and configuration.
Nextcloud Office comes to the desktop
Nextcloud is adding desktop Office builds through Euro-Office while continuing its browser-based collaboration options. The wider Office update includes slide sections, a new slide sorter, comment improvements, multi-page Writer views and many Calc refinements.
Desktop availability does not remove the need to confirm document compatibility, organization policies and supported operating systems before a large deployment.
What is new in Talk, automation and Nextcloud Assistant?
Nextcloud Talk gains three clearer communication patterns. Classified conversations disable public links and guests, restrict several forwarding and recording options, and enable expiration by default. Channels allow moderators to publish while subscribers read and react. Announcements use a fixed audience that members cannot join or leave freely.
Nextcloud Flow and Tables expand automation and structured-data workflows. Tables adds relational columns, federated sharing, notifications and import/export improvements. Text gains inline comments and footnotes, while Notes adds templates, version history and a distraction-reducing Zen mode.
Nextcloud Assistant adds streamed responses, OCR, skill files, file attachments, background task scheduling and additional context tools. The company also reports faster task handling and updated default local models. Administrators should treat model support, hardware needs and data-handling choices as deployment decisions rather than assuming every AI feature is automatically enabled.
What should administrators check before installing Nextcloud 35?
A major server upgrade deserves a maintenance window. Check the official Nextcloud download page, administrator documentation and application store before proceeding.
| Check | Why it matters | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| Server and PHP requirements | Unsupported runtimes can block the upgrade | Compare the current host with official requirements |
| Third-party apps | An app may not yet declare Nextcloud 35 support | Update, replace or disable incompatible apps |
| Database and files backup | Rollback requires both data sets | Create and verify a restorable backup |
| Background jobs | Large migrations may need time | Use cron and watch logs during maintenance |
| Staging test | Production configurations are unique | Clone and test before the live upgrade |
Do not skip directly across unsupported major versions. Follow Nextcloud’s supported upgrade path and use the updater or documented command-line process. All-in-One users should wait until the update appears in the AIO interface; Nextcloud says it will become available there when ready.
Organizations currently comparing private cloud platforms may also find our ownCloud deployment guide useful for understanding the broader self-hosted file-collaboration category, although its commands and product architecture are different from Nextcloud 35.
Should existing Nextcloud servers upgrade immediately?
Home users who are comfortable testing can upgrade after creating a backup and checking their installed applications. Production administrators should wait until their required apps and deployment method explicitly support the release, then test a representative copy.
This release contains attractive features, but there is no benefit in trading a stable collaboration server for an avoidable outage. Teams relying on compliance or enterprise support should also wait for the certified Enterprise version described by Nextcloud.
Our assessment
The most important change is not any single photo or AI feature. It is the move toward team-owned resources. Collaboration systems often accumulate folders, boards and knowledge under individual accounts; giving the group a durable workspace addresses a real administrative problem.
The redesigned Photos application and desktop Office support also broaden Nextcloud’s appeal beyond file synchronization. Whether the release feels transformative will depend on how well those components perform on real self-hosted hardware and how quickly the app ecosystem completes its compatibility work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nextcloud 35 the same as Hub 26 Summer?
Nextcloud 35 is the server generation underlying the Hub 26 Summer product release and its coordinated application updates.
Is Nextcloud 35 a security-only update?
No. It is a major feature release. Administrators should still review the complete changelog and security notices relevant to their installation.
Will existing Nextcloud apps continue to work?
Not necessarily. Check every required app for declared Nextcloud 35 compatibility before upgrading a production server.
Can AIO users upgrade now?
Nextcloud says AIO users will be able to upgrade from the AIO interface once the update is made available there.
